Description

Tung oil is a transparent or slightly turbid liquid, extracted from the seeds of the tung nut (tung tree). It is the best quality drying oil available, and has been used for 100's of years from wooden boats to furniture and floors. Mixed with natural, food grade citrus terpenes for workability, this ready to go blend remains natural and non-toxic.

Used For

Ideal for timber treatments where water repellency is required. 100% natural & food safe finish.

◦ Timber sealer
◦ Decking oils
◦ Furniture & floor oils
◦ Chopping blocks & kitchen utensils
◦ Fine woodworking

Surface Preparation

Ensure the surface is clean and dry before application. Gilly’s LoThin can be used for a vigorous clean. For a lighter clean, you can use an all purpose cleaner.

If there is any oil, wax, grease, dirt or similar residue on the surface, it may affect the tung oil’s ability to cure - so a thorough clean is important.

How to Apply

To Raw Timber

  1. Wipe oil (with rag) or brush oil into the timber. Lighter coats are better. For floors and large areas, you can use a floor applicator with lambswool pad.
  2. Let it sit for 5 minutes. Wipe on more oil to areas that become dull, as the oil soaks in.
  3. Wipe off any excess oil within 10 minutes, and buff back firmly. This ensures even coverage and no ‘sticky spots’. 0000 Steel Wool can be used between coats, though not necessary.
  4. Apply 3 coats, repeating the same procedure. Best to wait 24 hours between coats. Apply more coats if desired or necessary. Lighter coats are best, especially after the first coat.
  5. Hang out any rags or soak in water. Don’t leave scrunched up, due to risk of combustion.

Dry Time

24 hours to dry between coats. As there are no driers, it can take 4 weeks to completely cure. Light usage is however perfectly fine within this time frame. There should be general water repellency within the first week if the conditions are right.

Maintenance

For general maintenance and wear, you can assess as you see fit.  We would recommend reapplying a light coat every 12-24 months to keep your timber looking fresh. Over time, with the right maintenance, the finish will only get stronger. When damaged, sanding is generally not required, you can reapply as needed, even to small areas.

Clean Up

Cleanup with Gilly’s Lothin. Warm, soapy water for hand washing.

Safety

  • Do not eat, drink or smoke around product. Wash hands after use.
  • CAUTION: Hang out rags to dry, or soak in water. Don’t leave scrunched up, due to risk of combustion.
