Pure Tung Oil
Gilly’s Pure Tung Oil is a 100% natural drying oil that penetrates deep into timber to nourish, protect, and enhance the natural beauty of wood. Extracted from the seeds of the tung tree, this traditional finish has been trusted for centuries for its durability, water resistance, and rich, natural look.
Unlike synthetic finishes, Pure Tung Oil cures within the timber fibres rather than forming a thick surface coating. The result is a breathable, hard-wearing finish that highlights the grain while protecting against moisture and everyday wear.
Made from 100% pure tung oil with no additives, VOCs or petrochemicals, it’s a natural choice for woodworking, furniture, flooring and food-contact surfaces when used undiluted.
Use for:
- Timber sealing and protection
- Decking and outdoor timber
- Furniture and flooring
- Concrete sealing
- Chopping boards and kitchen utensils
- Fine woodwork and woodworking projects
Food safe once cured*
Application
|
Coverage |
First coat: diluted at a rate of 50/50 (oil/solvent) 18 - 20m2 Subsequent coats: diluted 50/50 25-30m2 |
|
Surface Preparation |
Ensure the surface is clean and dry before application. Gilly’s LoThin can be used for a vigorous clean. For a lighter clean, you can use an all purpose cleaner. If there is any oil, wax, grease, dirt or similar residue on the surface, it may affect the tung oil’s ability to cure - so a thorough clean is important. |
|
How to Apply To Raw Timber |
|
|
Dry Time |
24 hours to dry between coats. As there are no driers, it can take 4 weeks to completely cure. Light usage is however perfectly fine within this time frame. There should be general water repellency within the first week if the conditions are right. |
|
Maintenance |
For general maintenance and wear, you can assess as you see fit. We would recommend reapplying a light coat every 12 months to keep your timber looking fresh. Over time, with the right maintenance, the finish will only get stronger. When damaged, no sanding is required, you can reapply as needed, even to small areas. |
|
Clean Up |
Cleanup with Gilly’s Lothin. Warm, soapy water for hand washing. |
